A Review Of The Garmin GPSMAP 5212
The Garmin GPSMAP 5212 is a marine navigator. This is a good piece of electronics but was rushed a bit to be released at Christmas last year so the electronics were not the best. Garmin has since taken care of this but you want to update all of the software and upload any patches that are available from Garmin. Most of the original problems were fixed when they released the next firmware.

The GPSMAP 5212 has a large 12 inch screen and uses a touch screen interface. It comes preloaded with Blue Chart g2 maps and you can easily add weather, radar and sonar by connecting to the Garmin Marine Network. You can access maps for all the coastal areas along the US as well as the coast line of the Bahamas, Hawaii and Alaska.
There are several extras as you can get the optional Vision SD car. This provides you a 3D view of the fish as you will get 3 dimensional maps. If you frequently are fishing in newer waters then the aerial photographs can help immensely. You can also use the auto guidance which will create you the best routes so you avoid any buoys, obstacles, obstructions and shallow water.
This unit is fairly pricey but then all of the others in its class are also pricey. Before ordering it online it is recommended that you go to the store and use a test model as it can be tricky and you should see if you are comfortable with the unit. Garmin has managed to stay on top of all the software issues and frequently provides updates to keep everything working well. The support form the company is excellent.
These GPS unites are excellent and can be a big help when out on the water. The ability to hook up to the Garmin fish network remotely is a big plus.
