Along with fashion, comes function. The interface has been somewhat overhauled and where you will see the biggest difference is the speed in which the gorgeous 2D and 3D maps load. So if you are in a new city and palnning to get around on foot, bus, train or metro, the nuvi will be perfect to help you navigate.

Fans of the reliable 305 will immediately notice quite a striking difference in the shape and design. Gone is the big over-sized square display unit as well as five of the navigation buttons and in their place are a new circular touch bezel control and a host of new features. It’s sleeker, sexier and more than 20 per cent lighter, so it’s a lot more practical to wear as a watch than the 305 (not to mention a pleasure to show off).

A minor down-point is that the smaller screen means the Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS only displays three fields, compared with four on the 305, and that there is no map page on the 405, but it does have three customisable data screens to allow you to display all the meaningful data. All you have to do is basically tap the bezel to scroll through the screens on the run.

The greatest new feature is the ANT+Sport technology that enables the device to transfer data to your computer as soon as the device is within range, meaning there’s no complicated method of transfer or leads to use. There’s also a heart-rate-specific training display, which wasn’t included with the 305.

One of the 305’s main sticking points was its delay in receiving a satellite signal. The new 405’s high-sensitivity GPS receiver provides improved tracking under trees and even near tall buildings and therefore a stronger signal during your run. So even in cities as built up as London, finding a signal was greatly improved, taking just a couple of minutes to locate and hold reception.

The Garmin 305 was such a successful piece of kit, it was hard to see how it could be improved on, but the Garmin Forerunner 405 Sports seems to have the edge in every respect.

Route planning options include the best route based on the shortest distance, fastest time, and amount of freeways demanded. When a longer trip is required, you can adjust your trip with multiple stops and rearrange them in any order you like. The trip can be further enhanced by the RoadMate in such a way that you save the most time and money.

Trip planning is easy too if you make absolute full use of the QuickSpell feature that allows you to enter a partial set of letters that make up the street name and the QuickSpell will highlight any letters to type to filter your search. You can also plan routes by simply touching any destination on the map.

If points of interests are one of the dealbreakers, the Magellan RoadMate 1440 provides you with over a million POIs located in preloaded maps of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico areas. You can even purchase a Mexico map if you wish to travel there. Some of the more advanced features allow POIs that are near highway exits to be specially searched for better trip planning and branded icon representations of known POIs for easier visibility. The Text-to-Speech feature keeps you focused on the road by letting it speak out the names of streets.

I’ve always been a Polar heart rate monitor user before but having not been greatly pleased that the strap broke on my RS400sd after less than a year, I decided to buy a Garmin Forerunner 305.

I carried out a ton of research online before buying my Polar RS400sd last year – and on the whole every comparison I saw was Polar vs Garmin. And it boiled down to one thing – footpod technology vs GPS technology.

For those that don’t know, footpods are quite small devices that attach to your trainers and have some cunning technology inside that somehow manage to work out how far your feet are moving when running. GPS however, means that your location is constantly being monitored by satellites in order to work out the distance (and therefore speed) of your run. Footpods are the option if you go with Polar, whereas Garmin Forerunner 305 uses GPS.

What Do You Get

1. The wrist unit
   First impressions are good. One of the other reasons I wasn’t keen on the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS in the past was the perceived size of the wrist unit. Now it’s here it’s a good surprise. It’s no way near as big as I thought it was going to be. Don’t get me wrong at all, you would be a bit mad to wear it as a normal watch, but I don’t think it looks as stupid on your wrist as a footpod looks on your trainer!
2. Interchangeable watch strap
   Now, this is a nice touch Garmin include a watchstrap just in case the one included as standard doesn’t fit your wrist!
3. Screwdriver
   An even nicer touch.. a screwdriver in case you do indeed to or want to change the watch straps!
4. The Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor chest strap
   This is the strap that goes round your chest (on top of your sternum) to send your heart rate details to the wrist unit. It has the look of an earlier Polar model I used, but it’s much more comfortable. And it’s certainly better than the strap that comes with the Polar RS400sd. The Garmin type is a lot easier to put on and take off.
5. USB cable
   For attaching the unit to your PC (or in my case my Mac).
6. The docking cradle
   This is what the wrist unit needs to be attached to when you transfer data to and from your PC/Mac.

    It’s nice that there are two guides – a quick start-up and a full manual. Obviously being a guy I decided to scan read the quick start guide!

Aviton GPS is one of the most affordable in car GPS navigation system available for cars today. Aviton GPS uses the iGo navigation software that provides both 2D and 3D mapping to provide an accurate perspective of the streets. You can actually see your car moving on the display as you are driving. It has all the maps of all the 50 states of US and also of Puerto Rico and Columbia. It also has an auto-route feature that will provide a new route whenever you digress from the original suggested route. However, you cannot immediately cancel a route in progress. While it has an audible voice prompt that you can follow when driving, it doesn’t have a text-to-speech converter so it cannot really announce particular street names, just generic directions.

So if you are looking for an affordable GPS navigation system for your vehicle that isn’t that expensive but is reliable enough for travelling utility, the Aviton GPS is the best bang for the buck unit for you.
